A unique and exceptional site for contemporary military history

"Kilianstollen was situated on the German front line, tracing a path to the west of Altkirch between 1914 and 1918. It was a large-capacity underground shelter, built in the early 1916 alongside the trenches, between 3.5 m and 6 m in depth, using techniques drawn from the mining industry. Several staircases provided connections to the outside. The gallery was heated by wood stoves, supplied with electricity and probably connected to the telephone system. A double flooring system facilitated water drainage. Basic furniture was available to the soldiers who took refuge there: beds, tables, benches, chairs, cupboards and shelves." (source PAIR).
